In Memory of Barbara
This post is in memory of my friend's mom, Barbara. I first met Barbara back in my college days. My most vivid memory is when we had a Mother/Daughter Sleepover at our dorm. What a blast! Barbara had all of us laughing our heads off the whole time. We even played a Mother/Daughter game like the Newlywed game with a twist. We played to see which mothers and daughters knew each other best. Barbara was a delightful woman who shared laughter and joy with everyone around her. She worked as a media specialist at an elementary school for 22 years. I got to go visit her school one day and you could tell that the kids absolutely adored her. She was a member of the same church for over 30 years and was married to her husband for 44 years. Her funeral today was a celebration of a life lived fully and abudundatly. One of the neatest parts of the funeral was her Bible which had all of her notes in it from 1977. What a treasure she left her kids and grandkids. We'll miss you, Barbara!

Friends
A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24
I attended the funeral of a dear friend's mother today. We have been friends since we met in 1985 at Central State University. There are five of us college buddies that still keep in touch. I hardly ever see or talk to Robyn, but for some reason when we see each other it is like no time has passed at all. I am thankful for the people that God has placed in my life, for the friends who stick closer than brothers, or in this case sisters. ;) Today all of us were able to attend the funeral. Now isn't that amazing in this day and age that all of us would be able to be there! It was a sad time, but also a time of fellowship and celebration of Robyn's Mom's life.

News Sites
I've been looking for a good site to read news stories on without a bunch of ads. I've looked at CNN, FOX, MSNBC and Google. Yes, Google has its own news site. It looks really neat. I'm going to try it out for a few days. You can click here to try it for yourself. Of course, it also includes a search tool so you can go through all those articles and find what you are looking for.

This story is not for the weak at stomach
I took the boys to swim lessons tonight. On the way there, Chase began crying hysterically and stated that he was not going to "wim." I told him that he was swimming no matter what. We were late to lessons so I took him on out to the pool where he proceeded to get in, still screaming at the top of his lungs. I then returned to the waiting area when one parent mentioned that a kid had thrown up. I did not have to look out there to know which kid it was. CHASE! He puked in the pool. They had to evacuate the pool, take all the kids to a different pool for their lesson and shock the pool! I hid in the bathroom for quite awhile. LOL! Actually, most of the parents were really nice about it and one lady told me that one of her kids had done the same thing the year before. Needless to say, Chase got his way. He did not have to "wim" today!

Too Much Stuff
Whew! I just finished cleaning out my office and the closet in my office. I often wonder how I accumulate so much paper. It looks better in here, but I still could use some more organization. My scrapbook stuff and photos are always in need of being organized. My desk looks much better, but somehow it always junks right back up. Oh well. At least, it looks good for now. Now I can get some work done in here.

Laura Bush
I was flipping channels last night when I saw Laura Bush doing an interview with Jay Leno. I'd forgotten how much I like her until I watched this interview. Mrs. Bush has a great sense of humor and carries herself with class. The best part of the show was when Leno asked Mrs. Bush what she had done in Vegas. Mrs. Bush replied, "Jay, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas." What a hoot! Then later in the show when Leno asked her about arguing with President Bush, she replied, "Jay, what happens in the White House stays in the White House." LOL You can read the whole interview here.

The Outcasts of 19 Schuyler Place by e.l. konigsburg
Finished this wonderful children's book over the weekend. In fact, I read it in one day! This is e.l. koningsburg's latest book and it is excellent. She cleverly weaves several characters and themes together throughout the book and then ties it all together at the end. Have I told you this is one of my favorite authors? I first discovered her in about 4th grade when reading From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. Back to the book, this story is about Margaret Rose, a girl rescued from summer camp by her eccentric uncles. It is a story of standing up for what you believe in and fighting for it.

Just One Look
I finished the book last night. It was definitely full of surprises and twists and turns. I enjoyed reading it. However, I do not think this book was near as good as Harlan Coben's other ones. If you haven't ever read him, read Gone for Good or Tell No One. They will knock your socks off!

On My Nightstand
Just One Look by Harlan Coben - I'm almost finished with this brand new book. It is a page turner so far. I'll post a full review after I finish.
One Year Bible - Don't faint...I'm still going strong!
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen - I was inspired to read this classic after reading about it in Reading Lolita in Tehran. I can't believe I've never read it, so I guess now's the time.

Max and Ruby
If you have small children, I'm sure you're familiar with this tv show on Nick Jr. I just want to know one thing. Where are the mom and dad? I've seen Grandma. I've seen Mrs. Huffington. I've seen Baby Huffington, but I've never seen a mom or dad on the show. It is weird! Yes, I have spent time pondering this unimportant subject, but it still bugs me. Further, I've talked to other moms who want to know the same thing. If anyone knows, please email me!

Tea Time
I went to a Mother-Daughter Tea with my grandma at her church today. It was so nice. Fancy tablecloths and decorations along with plenty of snacks. Everyone brought their own teacup and told the story behind it. It was so neat and interesting to hear everyone's stories. The speaker talked about how we have to be empty in order to be filled. Interesting paradox. Ponder these scriptures:
"Everyone who drink this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. " John 4:13
"You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows." Psalm 23:5
"Blesses are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled." Matthew 5:6

Ordering our Circumstances
At Bible Study Fellowship,we have been talking about how God orders all our circumstances to accomplish His will in our lives. This morning while reading the book of Ruth, I was reminded of this important truth. Ruth is the amazing story of a woman who refuses to abadon her mother-in-law after the death of her husband. She moves with her to Israel far away from Ruth's homeland of Moab. It is here in Israel where Ruth begins gleaning the fields of Boaz for wheat. I'm sure most of you know the rest of the story. Ruth and Boaz get married and have a son. Here's the part I love most, though, Ruth is David's great-grandma! She is part of the lineage of Jesus. The other part I love is the story of Boaz as Ruth's kinsman redeemer. This is a picture or foreshadowing of Jesus' work for us to redeem us as His own. Read Ruth (it is short!) and enjoy the wonderous way God orders all our circumstances. Amazing!

The other part I love is the story of Boaz as Ruth's kinsman redeemer. This is a picture or foreshadowing of Jesus' work for us to redeem us as His own. Read Ruth (it is short!) and enjoy the wonderous way God orders all our circumstances. Amazing!

Josh Groban
I've been listening to Josh Groban's new cd and it is awesome! This guy can sing beautifully. You can listen to some of his songs on his website. (Click the link on the title of this entry.) Just click on "play a song" at the top right of his site. Enjoy!

Click It or Ticket
I just got a darn ticket for not having my seatbelt on. Now what you must know is that I always wear a seatbelt! I'm not kidding. I rarely go without one, but made the mistake of not putting it on while I was driving the kids home from swim lessons. RATS! Thankfully, the ticket is only $20. Look out. The sheriff who pulled me over said this was the first day of the "Click It or Ticket" campaign.

2 Corinthians 10:5
Sometimes I post a verse just because I've read it a million times and then finally it makes sense or becomes relevant. Here's your thought for the day:
"We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ."

Quote This
I like this quote about reading fiction from Reading Lolita in Tehran.
"A novel is not an allegory, I said as the period was about to come to an end. It is the sensual experience of another world. If you don't enter that world, hold your breath with the characters and become involved in their destiny, you won't be able to empathize, and empathy is at the heart of the novel. This is how you read a novel: you inhale the experience. So start breathing."

Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi
I have one word for the book...FABULOUS! I was hooked within the first chapter. This book is amazing not only for its insights into living in Iran, but also for its analysis of classic books. This book will open your eyes to how women and intellectuals are treated in Iran. We have no idea how good we have it here in the United States. This book is a must read! This book is my book club's selection for the month and we will be meeting on Thursday night to discuss it, so I'll post more then. Until then, run to your bookstore or library and get this book.
Here is a little about the author which I found on Bookbrowse.
Azar Nafisi is a professor at Johns Hopkins University. She won a fellowship from Oxford and taught English literature at the University of Tehran, the Free Islamic University and Allameh Tabatabai University in Iran. She was expelled from the University of Tehran for refusing to wear the veil and left Iran for America in 1997. She has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and The New Republic, has appeared on countless radio and television programs, and is the author of Anti-Terra: A Critical Study of Vladimir Nabokov’s Novels. She lives in Washington, D.C., with her husband and two children.

I'm BACK!
Sorry about my absence. I have been busy with various things. I had a colonoscopy on Thursday so of course it took all day Wednedsay to prepare for the darn thing. That is the worst part...the day before. You have to drink 4 liters of some nasty stuff and clean out your system. I'm sure this is more information than you wanted to know. ;) Anyway, everything is fine and dandy. Thank goodness! I spent most of Thursday sleeping which was such a treat. I rarely lay around and nap these days. Gee....I wonder why?! The anesthetic they gave me totally knocked me out. I got up Thursday afternoon and my friend Toni picked the boys and me up to go to swimming lessons. Thanks to Toni for being my chaffeur that day. Then Chris and the boys and I packed up and went to the lake. We had a nice, relaxing weekend. It rained all day Saturday so by the end of the day I was experiencing cabin fever. The sun came out this morning and it was gorgeous! So, anyway, I am now back among the blogging.
